The 38th Cetate Onsen Carp Streamer Festival" is being held from April 1 (Sat.) to May 6 (Sat.), 2017, at Cetate Onsen, a hot spring resort in the northernmost part of Kumamoto Prefecture. This year's large flock of carp streamers in the sky over the Cetate River is filled with many different thoughts and feelings.
Some of the carp streamers were decorated with the national "Arigato" ("Thank you") in dialect to express gratitude to those who helped them in the aftermath of last year's Kumamoto earthquake, while others contained catch phrases, words of gratitude, and resolutions for reconstruction from all the cities, towns, and villages in Kumamoto Prefecture.
In addition, carp streamers with the names of individuals are hung to wish for the healthy growth of the children.
Not only the carp streamers, but also the scenery of the back alleys, which is said to have served as a model for the movie, is quaint.
Also, the "Canegatate pudding" steamed with steam is a must-try in Canegatate Onsen! This is also a must-try.
The carp streamer festival period ends on Saturday, May 6, but the period will be slightly extended on Sunday, May 7, when the "Canegatate Onsen Michikusa Market" will be held with specialty products from Oguni Township and Hita, so you can enjoy the taste of Canegatate while viewing the carp streamers.
We invite you to experience the graceful dance of carp streamers in the sky and the pure, high-quality hot spring water.
